I like Mickey Mouse, but bugs is OK because he never messes with somebody until they mess with him.  Bugs is a bit more "counter-culture" while Mickey is mainstream.

My name is Nicholas Rohde.  I'm a graduating Rec student, about to enter the emb program.  I'm going to be starting my own company, and I need a logo designed as soon as possible.  I'm willing to trade work, if you need anything musically in return.

I'm starting a company called "Kenebula Records & Production" (combination of my Hometown of Kenosha & Nebula) with the working slogan of "Where Stars Are Born"  (Slogan is not a requirement in logo)

Going to be offering services of all kinds--studio recording, live sound, live recording, show booking, show promotion, etc...

In addition to a family of bands to start record distribution with.

I'd like the design to be able to transfer cleanly to stuff as big as posters, and small as business cards, and to look good on both.  Simpler and brighter the better.  I don't want something too Intricate that will look awesome on poster/website, but be unreadable on a business card, and vise versa.

Spent the last 8 hours trying to figure out photoshop to no avail.

If you can be of service, you will be fully credited.

Thanks in Advance

Nicholas

Hello Everyone and Welcome!

I recently took a look at the new rash of plug ins that are currently available.  I am impressed.
Some of you know me as your resident luddite, not taking technology into my life in happy ways, but rather kicking and screaming.  I recently have undertaken Solid State Logic's Duende Native plugins 30 day trial.  I am impressed with their sound quality and usefulness overall.  Not because I feel it's necessary to spend a bunch of cash on something, but because they do sound fairly close to the E/G equalizer, compressor and bus compressor located inside the SSL 4048 console.  Some of you may know that I'm more inclined to buy something analog or build it myself, but this is a situation that might yield decent results and IT'S NOT ANALOG????

Some of you know that it has been a multi-year job of mine, promoting software.  I am hesitant to speak on someone's behalf (unless of course there is a ton of cash behind that train) to reach a potential audience.  In this case, SSL has done a good job at price vs. performance in getting it right for you and I to utilize these great tools in a format that is widely usable.  I commend them on very nice quality emulation plugins- NO HARDWARE necessary!

http://solidstatelogic.com/music/duende native/

Also check out FLUX plugins.  http://www.fluxhome.com/   Quality isn't cheap, but these are some of the best I've heard that aren't hyped by the normal magazine BS engine.  And I don't even get a dime from this.......Flux offers 50% off for students too....SWEET.

So you ask me....."Scott, are plugins ready for prime time?"  I say yes and no.  I throw at you a healthy dose of skepticism.

Good microphones, preamps and outboard will go farther in the long run, but these plugins are hard to deny.  They make a good addition without spending $1000 a box.  I'd say they're about at the brunch level.  Not quite lunch, not quite breakfast.

Cheers,

Scott  (The person known as swilson)

Where is media heading? Is the internet really like the new bible? What is our future? Media can be a good tool to use but it can also be a bad one. How will you control your future media?

LIGHTENING STRIKES HURT!

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE STRUCK BY LIGHTENING?

LET'S PRAY YOU NEVER HAVE TO FIND OUT.  I'LL TELL YOU WHY.  ON AUGEST 15TH, 1985, I WAS IN THE MILITARY, WORKING ON AN AIR FORCE BASE IN INDIANA.  IT WAS RAINING AND WE HAD A WARNING OF SHEET LIGHTENING AND HEAVY RAINS.  I WAS ORDERED TO GO OUT INTO THE STORM AND DELIVER A POWER UNIT TO OUR FUEL STORAGE FACILITY.  I WENT OUT TO HOOK UP THE EQUIPMENT AND NEVER MADE IT PAST THE READY LINE WHERE ALL THE EQUIPMENT IS READILY STORED.  BANG IN A BLINK OF AN EYE, I WAS THROWN TWENTY FEET IN THE AIR AND KNOCKED UNCONCIOUS.  THEY RACED ME TO THE HOSPITAL, WHERE THEY TREATED MY BURNS AND FOR THREE WEEKS, I LAY IN THE HOSPITAL, UNABLE TO WALK, OR MOVE A MUSCLE WITHOUT FEELING EXTREME PAIN.

BUT, I SURVIVED.  YOU WOULD THINK THAT AFTER ALL THAT PAIN AND SUFFERING, I WOULD HAVE LEURNED MY LESSON.  NOT!  ON AUGUST 17TH, 1986 ONE YEAR AND TWO DAYS APART, I WAS STRUCK FOR THE SECOND TIME.  THIS ONE HURT WORSE.  I WAS VISITING FRIENDS IN BASE HOUSING DURING A THUNDERSTORM.  THIER DOG WAS CHAINED OUTSIDE AND WAS FREEKING OUT WITH THE STORM.  MY GIRL FRIEND WHO IS NOW MY WIFE, WANTED TO GO OUT AND RELEASE THE DOG.  I SAID ABSOLUTELY NOT!  I'LL GO.  SO I DID.  THE DOG WAS SO SCARED IT WAS RUNNING AROUND IN CIRCLES, SO I GRABBED THE CHAIN A WRAPPED IT AROUND MY ARM TO RELEASE THE COLLER AND THE DOG WAS TRYING TO BITE ME TOO.  JUST AS I RELEASED THE DOG, I FELT IT COMING. I WAS'NT FAST ENOUGH AND WAS OUT ONCE AGAIN.  BUMMER.

SO HERE IT IS.  I HAVE NERVE DAMAGE WITH NO FEELING IN MY FINGER TIPS, MY LEFT LEG IS NUMB 24/7 AND I SUFFER FROM (PTSD) POST TRAUMATIC STREES DISORDER, WEEKNESS ON THE LEFT SIDE AND CONSTANT PAIN.  WHAT A LIFE.  ONLY 20% OF ALL LIGHTENING STRIKES ARE FATAL.  THIS LEAVES 80% WHO SUFFER GREATLY BECAUSE THE DOCTORS DON'T KNOW HOW TO TREAT THESE PAINS.  MY NERVES WILL FIRE WHEN EVER THEY CHOOSE AND SOME TIMES IT REALLY HURTS.  SO THERE YOU HAVE IT.  FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU LIKE.

Hello Everyone,

It seems as though every successful artist at some stage of their career,

undertakes the idea of their own private recording space.

In the current issue of Mix magazine- March 2010- Mr. Kravitz seated in front of his british Helios console, adjacent to his EMI/Abbey Road sidecar.  It makes the mind spin to see such a collection of vintage gear in a very comfortable and stylish environment.  Ancient Pultecs, tube limiters and tape machines alongside modern counterparts exhibit a best case scenario for Lenny with all the trimmings.  Success bears it's fruit.

Other artists, most notably Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, and Prince all have (or had) elaborate facilities to cook up down home music off the clock and without the constant pressure of time constraints.  Hendrix's Electric Lady, also mentioned in the March 2010 issue of Mix, was state of the art for it's time- Jimi purchased the first 8 track Ampex machines available for his "home studio".  Eel Pie, Pete Townshend's home away from home has been recording Pete and his peers since 1970!

Most elaborate in it's heyday, Paisley Park.  Prince's "workspace".  First a private extravaganza, then shop for hire- Paisley Park was, and still is, in many ways the gauge by which artists create their personal studios.

There's always been a "do it your way" ethic among artists, and these three are no exception.  It's hard to question the end result as most people have heard the finished product, much to their pleasure.  The most important decision is WHEN to undertake something of this magnatude.  Artists, start searching for that cool gear and saving for that breakout moment in your career when you too will step into full-on studio ownership.  But until then, be wise and budget wisely.

Until next time,

Getting started:

Everyone by now should have a linkedin account created and actively seeking new network links.

If not, go to this website and start you networking right now:

www.linkedin.com

Create a profile and add as much detail as you can.  Include past jobs and education, awards and groups you belong to.

While in your profile, start requesting admission to networking groups. Check out my profile to get an idea of typical ones in our industry.  You can also search groups.  After being approved to join, you can then post messages and start discussions.  It's also a lot easier to request a link from people that are in the same group as you.  Give it a try.

Here are just a few:

Ok, i don't know if i'm the only person in the entire school who's posted a blog since April or what, but since as far as i can tell everybody sees my blog when they log into MMISpace, i figured i'd use this space to advertise my punk band. We just shot a music video, you can find it on the youtubes. The song is called Overcaffeinated + Underpaid. There's another damidol video on youtube for a song called Old Man, that one was done two years ago and i don't necessarily reccomend watching it. The band's lineup was different then. Anyway you can also check out our music at myspace, and become a fan of us on the facebook. Upcoming shows:

7/11 The Frequency "Freqy Hour"
5:30pm w/The Pints, Screw City Saints, $5 i think

7/17 The Wisco CD RELEASE PARTY
9:00pm w/tba, $5

7/31 Area 51 Bar

9:30pm w/SEED, The Lately, $3

Twitter's meteoric rise in the  social media world has had quite a few people, at least in my class, puzzled. When we discuss Twitter in Media Trends there's usually some jokes made, or puzzled looks from people who just don't get it. Is it just a passing trend, or a great new way of interacting on the internet?

Twitter was founded by Biz Stone and really was built around 2006. Since then, the site has gone nowhere but up. To be perfectly honest, when I first joined Twitter, I didn't get it. It seemed like a lame version of RSS feeds where people's useless blather was given a place on the internet. Isn't that what MySpace and LiveJournal are for? Or so I thought.

The way Twitter works is this: For yours and any account, there are  "followers" and "following." Your "followers" are people who find your "tweets" interesting. You can consider them pseudo-friends. Your "following" users on Twitter are the people that you, your account, are following. You choose who you follow.

The thing people need to keep in mind is the public nature of Twitter. Unless you turn on Twitter's privacy settings, ALL your tweets, no matter how embarassing, can be seen by all. Yes, stupid tweets have gotten some people fired before. Use your common sense- if you have any.

I've been a member of Twitter for well over a year now. I won't say I've got it totally figured out- because I don't, but I can offer some observations and insights on it to newcomers, or people who just flat out hate it.

Here is a list of things I've learned on Twitter

1. Twitter is what you make of it

I can't tell you how many stupid guides I've seen to "Maximize your potential on Twitter" or "How to get tons of followers!" that really have no clue what they're talking about. No matter how you view it, Twitter is just a tool- treat it as an extension of yourself. Be yourself, learn how it works, and if it's your bag you'll enjoy Twitter as I do.

2.  You're more likely to connect with people you never dreamed of.

The other day, I pulled up my email, to which Twitter sends emails when I have a new follower. Lo and behold, it was one of the animators for Terminator:Salvation and X-Men Origins:Wolverine. The likelihood of me connecting with this other person otherwise, if not for Twitter, is practically impossible. I do that as just one example.

3. Once you get the hang of how to interact on there, and pick good people to follow, it's much more enjoyable

There's quite a bit of lingo that's popped up because of Twitter. For example: let's say I see a friend post a great blog or tutorial to Twitter. I would repost it, but with the original twitterite's username: RT @username: post    ReTweeting, as it's called, has helped a lot of great content spread like wildfire.

4. If you're interested in it, or it's your job, there's guaranteed to be cool people to connect with.

I have some standard criteria I apply to each person or corporate entity I follow.

             a) Are their tweets useful, thoughtful,  or just mindless blather?

I get new "followers" every day. Sadly, not all of them have quality tweets. I define someone as a quality twitterer if their tweets aren't all self centered, and it's obvious they're there for more than just some stupid get-rich-quick internet scheme and there to interact with others, and share good content. I recommend you read my friend Aaron Irizarry's amazing blog post, "You Are Only As Good as Your Content." http://www.thisisaaronslife.com/you-are-only-as-good-as-your-content/ IF you don't contribute good content, or retweet good content, chances are I'll ignore you. I could care less about how you rediscovered how you like pickles.

5. There's plenty of mindless blather to be had

But I thought you were going to convince us otherwise? I am, but like any large community of people on the internet, not all of what they post is going to be good. Like in real life, you choose your friends wisely. Sir Spam-a-lots about mundane trivial details of their life are sadly not hard to find on Twitter.

6. The uses of Twitter have yet to be fully realized

Twitter has been used in incredible ways already- the least of which is a breaking news source. When the plane crashed in the Hudson River recently- it was a picture on Twitter that the news networks all picked up on, not some AP Photographer or major news outlet who got it first- it was citizen journalism on Twitter. One big thing I can think of recently has been  "Twestival" a effort run by and funded by Twitter users to raise money for charity- they raised worldwide was $250,000- http://twestival.com/ Giveaways by companies have also been popular on Twitter- Drobo, a company who sells its Drobo product that is for large file storage solutions, is currently giving away a free Drobo. I personally have won free iPhone apps from @chrispirillo, the Tech editor for CNN.com.

7. If you think it, you can find it on Twitter

Comedy? Check. Fake accounts like @Chewbacca are full of funny tweets. The fake accounts of celebrities, or pop culture icons are often the funniest. Comedians are on Twitter- personally, I follow @jimgaffigan. Learning? Check. My personal interests, as a VMG student, consist of Motion Graphics and Visual Effects. I follow all the Envato accounts- @AETUTS, @PSDTUTS, @NETTUTS, @FLASHTUTS, @collis, @TUTSPLUS, and @VECTORTUTS. The traffic Twitter can drive to websites has made it very attractive to companies of all kinds. One of the more bizarre things I can remember lately is @MirimaxFilms giving 1 free Ticket to Adventureland, the movie, because someone made a public tweet that she wouldn't pirate the film.

8. Twitter is a lot like shouting into the dark

As the popular spoof video by _Current would state, Twitter is a lot like shouting into the darkness of the internet- but almost always, somebody answers. For example, today I was looking at different web hosting, and tweeted about it. Within minutes I got pitches from 3 different webhosts who were active on Twitter. Some of my favorite companies are on Twitter as well- @RedGiantSoftware is one of them, who makes the Trapcode Particular plugin for After Effects. The great thing about that is they usually post when there's a great deal they're offering- Twitter has saved me money with special coupons and discounts on more than one occasion

9. There's a billion different ways to interact with Twitter

The programs for Twitter are almost endless, but there's a few that have risen to the top of the pack. The web interface Twitter offers is just scratching the surface of Twitter. The most popular desktop programs for Twitter right now are TweetDeck, Nambu, and SeesmicDesktop. I prefer Nambu because of its intuitive interface and Mac-ness to it. The thing that makes these programs great is you can group the accounts you're "following" into different categories. For example, I have my Filmmakers in one group, and Creatives in another group. When you're following over 100 accounts, this keeps things from getting cluttered.

10. You can take it with you anywhere you go

In keeping with the previous number, Twitter has pervaded many mobile devices. Personally, I use TwitterFon for the iPhone. It's great, and free. Tweetie has proven to be the most popular on the iPhone, but it costs $2.99. There's a number of apps for the BlackBerry, as well.

Basically, envision what you want to do with Twitter, and do it! Don't tweet useless blather, and don't spam. Use your common sense- whether or not you realize it, your online presence is an extension of yourself to some extent- a representation. You don't want people to think you're an idiot, do you? I thought not- most people don't. Use it to its full potential- I've used it to befriend creative individuals who I've learned quite a bit from, get great deals, news, and really anything I decide to use it for.

You can dismiss Twitter as a fad, and useless blather- but you're depriving yourself of a fantastic resource, and web community. The thing about Twitter is it's many communities within the umbrella of Twitter. There's tons of people I've never "met" on Twitter, and don't care to meet. I've discovered how Twitter is useful, and how to connect with great Twitter users. Try it out for yourself and see if you don't do the same.

You may follow my updates at http://www.twitter.com/TheRedOwl - I can answer any questions you may have felt were not addressed here.

Pre-Production

WisconCinema's Grave Remembrance Script Concept Sept. 20th

I was on a feature film that dealt with... dream sequences, and thought that would be a good place to start. I know I wanted to make a "tweaked" out film with lots of things happening right in a row to throw the audience for a loop untill the end of the short.

Originally I thought I was going to be producing this on my own, but I ran into a couple friends who were interested in producing with me (Melissa Schaefer + Robb Thompson) and they happily agreed to help produce this monster ^. -

So we set out a date (That tuesday) and came up with all these really bad.. and really good ideas.. basically just spat out w/e came to mind and kept what was good, on one note.. we eventually decided we wanted a pig heart... yes.. a REAL pig heart, and of course one would think "OMG theres no way we can feasably get a pig heart" ... not the case! .. one quick call to (John Aguilera) and we had ourselves a gutted pig (which later actually turned out to be a lamb's heart.... but whos caring?

The Scripting process was rough... we sat there for 3 hours the first attempt... then another 3 the next week... than another 6, just finalizing the dialouge... (keep in mind its only a 6 min film)

So finally, we had a workable script. After that, I enlisted help from fellow classmates (Annie Clift, John Aguilera, Sylvia Gunther, Leah Bennete + Boyfriend) to Storyboard out The Script... 32 pages and 130 drawings later, we had oursleves a working board.. W00t *

* On a side note I must say how amazed I was to see like 5 people write out board after board with me just throwing myself around the room acting out each shot.. but hey! it worked!!!

Okay... so we got a script.. we got a Storyboard ... were set right? .... AWWW F***!! I Forgot Actors!!

So here we are.. 2 weeks before the shoot with only 1 actor... Robb Thompson as "Pete Taymes"... we still had like.. 14 other roles to fill... and these people had to be like.. ages 30-45 .. for EVERY role... where the hell do i find 14 35 year old's in 2 weeks...

(angels singing noise)

****CRAIGSLIST!!!!****

Gods gift to filmaking... seriously... only one problem.. I've never used craigs list before! Damnit!! So that was a hurtle to jump over... I mean... i know it sounds easy, you know... write an ad... but writing an add on a site never before visted is a nerve racker, beleive you me... so i wrote a basic add, explaining each role and gave a little back history to each character: Ages, Ethnicity, Gender.. the works.. now for those reading let me just cite something quick here...
POSTING AN ACTORS CALL ADD

Easy Right? Wrong there are several issues you NEEd to consider when posting an actors call.. like.. heres and example of what NOT to do...

Actors needed, will provide lunch, great for resume reel. Contact durstry@hotmail.com

seriously... i've seen these adds all over the place on Craigslist and likeminded sites.. IF YOUR GOING TO PLACE AN ADD SPRUCE IT UP A LITTLE AND ADD KEY INFORMATION!!!

Try This:

Actors needed for a short film being entered for the Twilight Fest, a DVXuser.com Film Festival

Theme: Something bigger is going on, things arn't as they seem (think Twilight Zone Style)

We will be shooting Saturday October 11th, from 7am-4pm lunch is provided

Pete Taymes: Age, 30-35 (Male) Pete just left his family for the war overseas, this decision weighs heavily upon him, Pete is part of a 4 man commado Ops. Team and normally functions as the teams Point Guard man.. armed with a Assault Shotgun. (Ethnicity: ANY)

We ended up going to a lighter "inside" for readabiltiy but we left the darker outside for contrast.

The Roger Nichols Plug Ins found on the Pro Tools systems in rooms 106, 112, and Control C offer signal processing resources that can help Madison Media Institute Recording students polish a mix. These plug ins are designed primarily for “meat and potatoes” functions in Mastering applications (Equalization, Dynamics, Metering), and can dramatically improve the sonic quality of projects while Mixing.

I rely heavily upon the RND (Roger Nichols Digital) Blue Multimeter while Mixing and Mastering in Pro Tools. This “meter” combines a Spectrum Analyzer, Level Meter, Headroom Meter, Phase Scope, Correlation Meter, Balance Meter, as well as Clipping Statistics and Alarms. While Pro Tools does have stereo and multi-channel level meters, it lacks a dedicated Spectrum Analyzer. The Spectrum Analyzer section of the RND Multimeter helps to quickly and accurately locate frequency energy distribution imbalances. The Alarms are especially useful for pointing out hidden clipping when adjusting limiters, allowing users to eek out every last usable bit of headroom without adding distortion. The Clipping Statistics section informs the user of the total number of clip incidents encountered throughout the program material.

I have grown quite fond of the RND Frequalizer. Frequalizer is a Finite Impulse Response filter capable of “learning” the frequency response of one audio source and applying it to your program material. This tool has dramatically reduced the amount of time doing mastering equalization – time that I used to spend A-Bing back and forth between the reference and program material – and improved the sonic quality of my work. There are many things that still need to be edited but the site is ready for basic testing. There are many things that need to be decided, like what kind of topics there should be in the forums. Who can do blogs? What permissions do students need? etc.

I'm hoping this site can become a great communication and collaberation to for students, faculty and administrators alike.
